When water is added to this grey powder, a chemical reaction happens, forming a paste which will harden with time. Cement is a binder used to create mortar or plaster by mixing with sand, or used to make concrete by mixing with aggregate (sand and gravel). Aggregate is added to reduce both the amount of cement needed and the shrinkage in Portland cement (the first patented cement).. The standard is OPC – Ordinary Portland Cement although today, there are many types of cement available, each for a specific purpose such as quick hardening.
